La rondine, a flimsy work in pastel colours
One hundred years after its debut in Montecarlo, a rarely performed work by the most famous Tuscan composer, Giacomo Puccini, arrived on stage in Florence. La rondine (The Swallow) is best known for a single song (“Doretta’s Dream”). It’s not a blessed opera.
Commissioned by Vienna Carltheater as an operetta, it became a true opera instead. Then there were problems with Ricordi, Puccini’s publisher’s, but above all La rondine was presented in 1917 at the high point of WW1…
